Environment Grants Awarded 2003

The Foundation is pleased to announce that the following organizations received grants through the Environment Program in 2003:

Northern Forests

Bird Studies Canada – $200,000 (partial payment of a multi-year grant)
Port Rowan, Ontario

For scientific research intended to test the effectiveness of current forestry guidelines as set out by the Crown Forest Sustainability Act in protecting bird communities and other wildlife populations in northern Ontario.

Canadian Nature Federation – $50,000 (partial payment of a multi-year grant)
Ottawa, Ontario

To support both the establishment of Mealey Mountains and Torngat Mountains national parks in Labrador and community participation in local land-use decisions.

Canadian Nature Federation – $40,000
Ottawa, Ontario

To enhance community participation in public processes on land use and development in Manitoba's boreal forest through the provision of technical review and information.

Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society – $164,000
Ottawa, Ontario

To support the national coordination of its boreal forest initiative as well as regional work on boreal forest issues in the North Central Region of Saskatchewan and the North Shore of Quebec.

Manitoba Eco-Network – $37,000 (partial payment of a multi-year grant)
Winnipeg, Manitoba

To establish and geographic information system and mapping centre for the environmental community in Manitoba.

Protected Areas Association of Newfoundland & Labrador – $75,000 (partial payment of a multi-year grant) St. John's, Newfoundland

Towards the establishment of the Lac Joseph-Atikonak Reserve in southwest Labrador and a wilderness reserve on the east side of the Great Northern Peninsula in Newfoundland through community outreach and scientific research.

Sierra Club of Canada – $60,000 Toronto, Ontario

To prepare a citizen-developed forest plan for Newfoundland through mapping research, the creation of a community network, public workshops and local support for alternatives to the "business as usual" scenario of forest management in the province.

Silva Forest Foundation – $60,000 (partial payment of a multi-year grant)
Slocan Park, British Columbia

To prepare an ecosystem-based conservation plan for the North Central Region of Saskatchewan aimed at protection of biodiversity and the provision for strong local economies.

Spirit of Giving Inc. – $60,000 (partial payment of a multi-year grant)
Scanterbury, Manitoba

To hire a lands management consultant to oversee the preparation and submission of a full management plan for the Poplar/Nanowin River Park Reserve currently under interim protection until 2004.

Temagami Wilderness Fund – $75,000 (partial payment of a multi-year grant)
Temagami, Ontario

To improve the ability of the public to participate in forest management planning in northeastern Ontario by supporting the local advisory committees to the Ministry of Natural Resources, establishing local forest networks, and providing linkages between local, regional and provincial policy processes.

The Sustainability Network – $60,000 (partial payment of a multi-year grant)
Toronto, Ontario

To bring the capacity building services of the Sustainability Network to the prairie provinces through partnerships with Manitoba Eco-Network and the Saskatchewan Environment Network.

Wildlands League – $45,000 Toronto, Ontario

To research and produce a report on roads in Boreal Canada through a literature review, mapping of roadless and accessed areas and the development of tools and strategies that can be used to input into land use planning processes.

Southern Landscapes

Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society – $30,000
Ottawa, Ontario

To support a collaborative effort with the New Brunswick Protected Areas Coalition to develop a conservation plan that will contribute to an emerging bi-national vision for the Appalachian/Acadian ecoregion.

Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society – $15,000 (partial payment of a multi-year grant) Ottawa, Ontario

To research, write and publish a guide to the Ecological Restoration of Old-Growth Forests providing a tool for habitat conservation and enhancement for the entire Appalachian/Acadian ecoregion.

Conservation Council of New Brunswick – $92,246 (partial payment of a multi-year grant) Fredericton, New Brunswick

To enhance its membership and public outreach work in an effort to increase both its effectiveness and long-term sustainability.

Couchiching Conservancy – $32,000 (partial payment of a multi-year grant)
Orillia, Ontario

To increase the Conservancy's capacity for land and conservation easement acquisition within areas of highest conservation priority in the Couchiching region.

Ecology Action Centre – $57,797 (partial payment of a multi-year grant)
Halifax, Nova Scotia

Support for its efforts to secure and promote the protection of Nova Scotia's Acadian Forest through scientific research, public education, management plan review, and coalition activities.

Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy – $40,000
Toronto, Ontario

General organizational support for its ongoing work to secure land along the Niagara Escarpment.

Hamilton Naturalists Club – $15,000 (partial payment of a multi-year grant)
Hamilton, Ontario

For the Halton Biodiversity Inventory Project run jointly by Hamilton Naturalists Club, Halton North Peel Field Naturalists' Club, South Peel Field Naturalists' Club intended to contribute to a better understanding of species status and biodiversity in the Halton region.

Lambton Wildlife Inc. – $50,000 (partial payment of a multi-year grant)
Sarnia, Ontario

To support The Big Picture Project -- the ecological restoration plan for Canada's Carolinian life zone.

Nature Conservancy of Canada – $86,000 (partial payment of a multi-year grant)
Toronto, Ontario

To conduct the research and consultation necessary to broaden the application of its internal revolving loan fund and to support its land securement activities in Quebec.

Nova Scotia Nature Trust – $50,000 (partial payment of a multi-year grant)
Halifax, Nova Scotia

To implement its strategic plan particularly in the areas of human resources development, communications, fundraising and staff training.

Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust – $25,000
Toronto, Ontario

For its efforts to secure the donation of title or easement on an additional 2,000 acres of significant natural land on the Oak Ridges Moraine through landowner contact, public education and the establishment of a donation monitoring system.

Ontario Land Trust Alliance – $37,000 Smiths Falls, Ontario

To implement a training and professional development program for the volunteers of the community based land trust movement in Ontario.

Rideau Waterway Land Trust – $18,080 (partial payment of a multi-year grant)
Smiths Falls, Ontario

To build the community based land trust movement in Ontario through the delivery of volunteer training programs and the development of a regional and provincial volunteer training model.

Seton Centre – $10,000 Carberry, Manitoba

For the Mixed-Grass Prairie Stewardship Program to increase public awareness about native mixed-grass prairie in southwestern Manitoba with the ultimate goal of preserving native habitat.

University of New Brunswick – $40,000 (partial payment of a multi-year grant)
Fredericton, New Brunswick

To support the Landscape-level Woodlot Conservation Project aimed at developing tools for private landowners to participate in large-scale conservation planning in southeastern New Brunswick.

Emerging Issues: Urban Growth and Development

Environmental Defence Canada – $25,000 (partial payment of a multi-year grant)
Toronto, Ontario

To research, write and publish a GTA Sprawl Indicators Report to be used as a practical planning and design tool for communities and municipalities throughout the Greater Toronto Area.

Federation of Ontario Naturalists – $98,900 (partial payment of a multi-year grant)
Toronto, Ontario

To continue their role in facilitating woodland conservation efforts in southern Ontario and to initiate the development of new conservation tools and resources to be used in "nature-first" land-use planning and smart growth.

Gaia Foundation for Earth Education – $20,000
Drayton Valley, Alberta

To undertake an analysis of Ontario's smart growth successes and failures for public audiences dealing with the areas of land-use, funding, governance and sustainable energy.

Pollution Probe – $20,000 Toronto, Ontario

To support the alliance of health, environmental, and consumer organizations in their effort to promote renewable energy through education, research and practical solutions.

University of Guelph, Centre for Land and Water Stewardship – $96,600 (partial payment of a multi-year grant) Guelph, Ontario

For the creation of an Ontario farmland conservation research program the aim of which is to investigate the patterns of farmland loss, develop stronger policies on farmland conservation and create a farmland trust.
