Discretionary Grants
When the Foundation undertook a review of its mandate a few years ago, the Board of Directors made a deliberate decision to attempt to strike a balance between the increasing focus of our programs and the importance of retaining a responsive element in our grant making. Consequently, the Foundation maintains a small reserve fund for making grants outside of its three program areas. The number and size of these grants varies from year to year, based on the number and quality of the initiatives that develop over the course of the year.
These discretionary grants give the Foundation the opportunity to support worthy initiatives that are consistent with our objectives but do not fit neatly into any one of our program areas. In recent years, the Foundation has played a seminal role in launching a variety of initiatives through its discretionary grants, including: The Creative Trust – Working Capital for the Performing Arts; the Green Barns at Wychwood Park; the internship program at The Walrus magazine; The Metcalf Archives at the Canadian War Museum; and the Metcalf Chair in Environmental Law at the University of Toronto.
The Foundation also supports the Vicky Metcalf Award for Children’s Literature, which is awarded annually by The Writers’ Trust of Canada to the author of a body of work in children's literature that, in the opinion of the judges, demonstrates the highest literary standards.
